It was a stellar week here at UCEM Grand Rounds! We kicked off the day with a lecture from our colleague at CCHMC, Dr. Dean, about management of pediatric airways. We then transitioned to a review of landmark studies in EM, specifically with regards to targeted and systemic thrombolysis for MI, stroke, and PE. We continued our day by discussing evidence based medicine and the implementation of this in the prehospital setting with EMS faculty, Dr. Richards. Next, Drs. de Castro and Thompson faced off in an epic battle of CPC where we covered the diagnosis and management of euglycemic DKA. This was then followed by Dr. Vaughan’s R1 diagnostics and therapeutics lecture on pneumothoracies. Finally, we wrapped up the day with Dr. Gillespie’s R4 capstone lecture.

This week’s edition of grand rounds featured some amazing lectures! We practiced pitching ideas in our leadership curriculum then the newest QI/KT pathway was revealed by Drs. Chuko and Goff. Dr Gawron taught us about medical causes of trauma and Dr. Kein gave us an amazing lecture on cyanotic congenital heart diseases. We finished off with Dr. Shewakramani giving an amazing wellness lecture about his BAYLEAF method for dealing with stress in the ED.

Then, Dr. Krack, one of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric EM fellows shared helpful hints in taking care of pediatric patients with Congenital Heart Disease. Next, Dr. Pulvino shared her clinical diagnostics lecture on Platelet Disorders. Dr. McKee finished our day with an exciting talk on medical ethics and how they apply to the Emergency Department. The first grand rounds of 2018 started out with an R4 Simulation that highlighted the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of salicylate toxicity.  This was followed by a guest lecture by Dr. Richard Sears, who discussed the benefits of wellness and mindfulness, and how we can apply them in the workplace.  Dr. Hall then went over the utility and application of various labs used to evaluate patients with sickle cell disease who present in vaso-occlusive crisis.  We then finished the conference with a case based discussion on septic bursitis led by Dr. Mike Klaszky.

We had a jam packed Grand Rounds this week kicked off by Dr. Carleton's airway lecture discussing tools to maximize fiberoptic intubation success. Next Drs. Roche and Plash led us through wilderness medicine small groups discussing plant ingestions and creative extrication techniques. Drs. Murphy-Crews and Bryant participated in a CPC case with a seizing neonate followed by Dr. O'Brien's discussion of blunt neck trauma. Next Dr. Cotton presented data on physician burnout and how to combat it while Dr. Li wrapped things up with an overview of Kawasaki's disease.
