Another week, another great Grand Rounds line-up at UCEM. We start off with our monthly Mortality and Morbidity Conference led by Chief Resident Dr. Finney. This session covers cases from the month of April- including the treatment of a canine in the SRU. One of our SRU leaders, Dr. Chhabria, shares the changing landscape of cardiac arrest management using ECMO. Next up, Dr. Thompson helps us reflect on the self-talk that we engage in on a daily basis and offers advice on how to improve our mindset- especially when we are on-shift. We learn from Dr. Kotei how to better ED proceduralists when encountering patients with ascites and/or pleural effusions. We end with Dr. Hajdu challenging Dr. Baez to solve a puzzling case of progressive vision loss in a otherwise healthy young patient.

This week, we started off with an excellent journal club led by Drs. Ijaz and Mullen discussing interventions aimed at improving access to primary care from the Emergency Department and then followed along with Drs. Ferreri and Skrobut as they battled out a case of mysterious altered mental status during the crowd favorite, CPC. Dr. Pulvino reminded us that not all rashes are simple through her case follow up and Dr. Gobble took us on a deep dive of the diagnosis and management of gastroparesis and cyclic vomiting syndrome. Finally, we closed out the day with lessons in nasal endoscopy and cricothyrotomy from the airway guru himself, Dr. Steven Carleton.

Curry and Ryan then presented the first Year Directives of the academic year discussing EMTALA criteria and how to negotiate a contract. Drs. Wosiski and Iparraguirre expertly discussed the literature behind angioedema management. Drs. Crawford and Doerning battled it out on a case involving hiccups (read to find out more about this fascinating case). And lastly, Dr. Stratton from our PEM division walked us through how to approach the pediatric patient and pearls on how to determine “sick” from “not sick".”
