Join us as we recap a very special week of Grand Rounds here at UCEM! We started off with Dr. David Wright, visiting us from Emory University, to discuss the very latest in ICH management and also share his pearls for developing into leaders in our field. Next, we are joined by Dr. Cheetham, a PEM attending and EMS fellow, who reminds us the importance of EMS handoffs and even offers ways we can improve the safety of our patients. Dr. Martella shares how his previous time spent working in fast food industry helped shape him into the dedicated and compassionate physician he is today. Followed by Dr. Lewis educating each of us on how to better recognize and manage acute-onset pulmonary edema in the crashing patient. Lastly, our PEM colleagues from CCHMC stop by to help us better diagnose and manage a child presenting to ED with a limp. This week certainly highlighted the collaborative nature of our speciality and we are beyond grateful for all our colleagues near & far that help make us into better providers!

Join us as we recap another fantastic Grand Rounds session. We started off with our longitudinal leadership curriculum, specifically focusing on recruitment and building a team. This was led by two prominent leaders in our very own emergency department- Drs. Fermann and LaFollette. Next, we join Dr. Finney on a journey as she reflects on the relationships we build with our patients and their families, as well as providing insight on how to cope with the grief that we may face following the most difficult cases. Lastly, Drs. Chhabria, Davis, and Gobble, help us prepare for the upcoming ITE exam by providing us with useful quick hits relating to orthopedic injuries, PEM, and toxicology.

This week’s Grand Rounds featured some amazing content! Starting with Dr. Paulsen, our leadership curriculum session focused on processing and learning from failure. We then discussed IV contrast extravasation with Drs. Milligan and Wosiski-Kuhn as they debuted their QI/KT protocol. Dr. Crawford reminded us of the dangers of carbon monoxide and we closed the day with an excellent introduction to the benefits of simulation-informed design with Visiting Lecturers Dr. Chris Hicks and Dr. Andrew Petrosoniak.

Extra! Extra! We had excellent content this week in Grand Rounds. Dr. Paulsen started us off with discussing the difference in generational and gender-based communication approaches in our quarterly Leadership Curriculum. Drs. Frankenfeld and Ijaz then expertly discussed their new status epilepticus algorithm in QI/KT. Dr. Hill discussed his passion for diltiazem use in A.fib with RVR in his attending case follow up. Dr. Martella educated us on the evidence behind the most common medications given for renal colic in the ED during his R1 Clinical Treatment. Lastly, Drs. Broadstock and Lang battled it out in CPC involving a case of thyroid storm.

This week’s edition of grand rounds featured some amazing lectures! We practiced pitching ideas in our leadership curriculum then the newest QI/KT pathway was revealed by Drs. Chuko and Goff. Dr Gawron taught us about medical causes of trauma and Dr. Kein gave us an amazing lecture on cyanotic congenital heart diseases. We finished off with Dr. Shewakramani giving an amazing wellness lecture about his BAYLEAF method for dealing with stress in the ED.

This was followed by Dr. Klaszky with his R4 case follow up of a patient with cardiac tamponade, and then Drs. Baez and Continenza faced off for the most recent installment of our Great Debate series as they discussed chemical vs electrical cardioversion for atrial fibrillation. Finally, our colleagues from Cincinnati Children’s presented learning pearls about causes of and interventions for hypoxia in pediatrics emergency medicine.

Next, Dr. Hughes gave her Taming the SRU follow up lecture on debriefing and fat embolism syndrome followed by Dr. Spigner’s R4 Case Follow Up Lecture on streptoococcal toxic shock syndrome. The week wrapped up with simulation and oral boards practice covering acute right heart failure and anterior uveitis.

We had a diverse and interesting set of topics for this week of Grand Rounds! Dr. Mehlman, a pediatric orthopedist, took us through high-yield, can’t miss orthopedics cases. Following this, we went through strategies in team-building and recruitment with Drs. Stettler, Fermann, and McDonough as part of our Leadership Curriculum. Dr. Jarrell then presented local data on our Naloxone Distribution program and opioid overdoses. We concluded the day with a lecture on hernia diagnosis and management by Dr. Leech, followed by a fantastic small group session on Wellness lead by Drs. Jarrell and Banning. This week's Grand Rounds started out with another installment of our leadership curriculum led by Dr. Stettler, where we discussed how to identify and manage finance in leadership.  This was then followed by Dr. Makinen's small group session on thyroid diagnostics in the ED.  Drs. Gauger and Loftus then went head-to-head on a case of syncope, found to have a massive PE.  Dr. Miller then gave a great summary of current thoughts and future approaches to sepsis, followed by Dr. Murphy discussing post-ENT procedure bleeds in the ED.  Dr. Curry then finished off the conference with his "Mastering Minor Care" segment on epistaxis.
