Harty and Comiskey faced off in a CPC case of DRESS syndrome and finally Drs. Gottula and Skrobut gave our quarterly Air Care Grand Rounds on HEMS stroke management.

This week we brought in the new Roaring 20s with an exciting lineup. Drs. Gauger, Humphries, Jarrell, and Owens led us through a simulated case of hypertensive emergency in a cocaine body packer. Dr. Gressick taught us about blunt carotid artery injuries, and Dr. Gottula discussed resuscitation of septic patients with comorbid CHF and ESRD. Dr. Ham took a detour from clinical topics to discuss how to go about finding your niche in medicine, and Dr. Doerning increased our financial literacy with his high-yield points. Finally, our colleagues from Cincinnati Children’s helped us learn the nuances of having difficult conversations with children and their families.

This week we disccused interventions for the crashing asthma patient with Dr. Mand, ESRD and dialysis related complications with Dr. Scanlon, shoulder and elbow xrays with Drs. Crawford and Scanlon, and a case of intussusception in an adult patient with Drs. Hunt and Bryant. Dr. Gauger provided his case follow up on PJP pneumonia complicated by methemoglobinemia, and Dr. Li took us through the ins-and-outs of gastric lavage in a simulated case of calcium channel blocker overdose.

Dr. Betham started off Grand Rounds with this month's Morbidity and Mortality Conference, where we learned about Gout, ITP, Stroke, and Hyperkalemia in ESRD patients. Dr. Teuber walked us through the varying recommendations regarding ED Thoracotomy and Dr. Banning taught us how to handle neonatal urgencies. Leadership Curriculum wrapped up this week's conference with a session on how to pitch an idea.

Annals of B Pod - B Pod Case: Taking Renal Failure to Heart

The first article from the December 2016 issue of Annals of B Pod is of a patient that is a male in his late 30s with a past medical history significant for trisomy 21, stage III chronic kidney disease of unspecified etiology, and hypertension who presents to the Emergency Department with emesis and dark stools.  The patient is unable to contribute significantly to his history, but his family relates that two days prior to presentation, the patient experienced two episodes of “coffee ground” emesis according to the patient’s home health nurse. Over the next day, the patient subsequently experienced several episodes of melenic stools. His family also notes that he has seemed feverish, more lethargic, and less active than his baseline.
